20th Century: Growth and Challenges
- 03 August 2025
In the early 20th century, the hospital expanded its services significantly. Although it was temporarily closed during World War I, it reopened under British rule following the Balfour Declaration of 1917. With the establishment of the British Mandate in Palestine (1920–1948), the hospital modernised and gained greater prominence.
After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the hospital relocated to Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem. In 1960, a new facility was built, becoming a vital centre for treating eye diseases across the region. However, following the 1967 Six-Day War, East Jerusalem came under Israeli control, which complicated access to care for Palestinian patients.
