St John Ambulance London Region Champagne Reception at the Museum of the Order of St John in aid of the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group

On 23rd October from 6pm to 8pm, St John Ambulance London Region is hosting a Reception at the Museum of the Order of St John. The evening will raise funds for the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem, and it will also be an opportunity to view a new long-term loan to the Museum, accompanied by a brief talk by the Curator.

Caravaggio’s The Cardsharps is a much copied image of enduring appeal. The renowned art scholar and collector, Sir Denis Mahon, acquired a version of it in 2006 virtually identical to another by Caravaggio, in the Kimbell Art Museum, Texas. After exhaustive study and scientific analysis, Sir Denis concluded that this was an earlier version, an attribution supported by other leading Caravaggio scholars. It is this work that has been loaned to the Museum of the Order of St John.

St John Ambulance, London are raising funds to sponsor a nurse in the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group. Usama Jarara trained at the Jerusalem Eye Hospital as a Specialist Ophthalmic Nurse and now works on the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme. Diabetic retinopathy affects 80% of those who have had diabetes for over ten years. In a region where the rate of diabetes is three times higher than in the West, and considering diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness if left untreated, such work is vital for saving sight. Usama is involved in screening an estimated 33,000 patients over three years to check for diabetic retinopathy, which is the third largest cause of blindness in the West Bank.

Tickets cost £35 and include drinks and canapés.
