CEO, Rod Bull, Medical Director, Jeanne Garth, and Director of Nursing, Ahmad Ma’ali, met with the Jordanian Royal Court Chief, Nasser Lozi, at the Royal Palace in Amman on Monday 29 March. The party had been invited to the Palace in order to receive a donation of US$500,000 from Mr Lozi, who presented the gift on behalf of His Majesty King Abdullah II.
The Royal Hashemite family have a long history of supporting the Hospital Group. In 1960, it was His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan who inaugurated our main Hospital building in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of Jerusalem.
In April 1983, His Majesty’s support was crucial in preventing the closure of the St John Eye Hospital. The then Hospitaller, Sir Stephen Miller, had been asked by the Order of St John to make preparations to close the Hospital because funds could not be found to pay for running costs and an alarming deficit had accrued. On a private visit to Sir Stephen’s consulting rooms, King Hussein was fully briefed on the subject and, within an hour, a cheque had arrived to clear the deficit in full, along with a promise that the King of Jordan would send an annual donation for the endowment of a bed in the name of a member of his family.
All at the St John Eye Hospital Group would like to express their humblest gratitude to His Majesty King Abdullah and all of his family for their much valued interest in the work that we do.
