The 18th of February 2010 was an important day in the history of the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group. Attended by the Grand Prior, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, it was the official opening of the Group's new offices at Charterhouse Mews in London – and the beginning of a new chapter in its history. By complete coincidence it would also have been the 70th birthday of Robert Krehl, without whose exceptional generosity the day could not have been possible. Krehl’s generous gift, shortly before he died, means that the Eye Hospital Group now has a permanent, rent-free office space in London.
Principle guests on the day were Robert Krehl’s widow Monique, his son Oliver and his daughter in law, Suetlana. All were shown around the impressive buildings, which were officially opened by His Royal Highness. In his speech, the Duke thanked that person who had originally asked Robert Krehl to get involved with the Hospital Group and praised both Krehl and what his gift will mean both for the Hospital and the Order of St John (with whom the offices are shared), ‘He had the foresight to understand St. John’s ethic ...to help and encourage it here in the UK, and to look outwards and internationally...this will be a huge boost for St. John.’
The Order Prelate, the Rt Reverend Jack Nicholls, Bishop of Sheffield, said a prayer giving thanks for Krehl's life and blessing the new building. After the speeches, staff and dignitaries mingled and all had the opportunity to look at the new buildings, whilst in the marquee drinks and canapés were served. This attendee is sure that much of the discussion that took place was in reference to Robert Krehl – so obviously a remarkable and generous man.
Mrs. Krehl summed up the day well, ‘It has been such a wonderful occasion. We are delighted to be here. We just wish Robert could have been here with us.’
