50 Years in East Jerusalem

As 2010 is the Golden Anniversary of our current main Hospital building in Sheikh Jarrah, in this first Jerusalem Scene of the new year, we launch our Annual Appeal, based around the expansion of the building itself. As well as taking a look back over some of the milestones of our last 50 years in East Jerusalem, we ask for your help in raising the money needed to expand the Hospital's increasingly important Retinal Unit.

Appeal 2010

To Raise £150,000 for the Upgrade of our Retinal Unit.
As we shall see elsewhere in this edition, the St John Eye Hospital Group has much to celebrate as 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of our main hospital building in East Jerusalem. Always responsive to the environment and to how we can best help those who most need our charitable services, the Jerusalem Hospital has found itself literally having to shift location three times during its 128 year history.

Thoughts from our Chief Executive
Mr Rod Bull

A day in the life of… Mr. Rod Bull. As we begin a new year at the Hospital Group – and launch a new appeal for your assistance – it seemed like the perfect time to ask our CEO, Mr Rod Bull, to set down for us some of the finer points of a typical day at our Jerusalem Hospital. Here is what he had to say… “There is no necessity to set an alarm clock – the honour of waking me goes to the Immam of the local Sheikh Jerrah Mosque, who also acts as my snooze control button and is followed within 15 minutes or so by the most wonderful Jerusalem morning light streaming though my bedroom curtains. Time to get up!

Jerusalem Welcomes New Senior Staff Member
Ahmad Ma’ali takes over as Director Nursing In our Winter 09 Edition, Jerusalem Scene paid tribute to Jacqueline Jaidy, who retired as Matron at the end of September. Here, we welcome Mrs. Jaidy’s replacement, Mr. Ahmad Ma’ali takes over as Director of Nursing. Ahmad Ma’ali first came to our Hospital in Jerusalem as a Practical Nurse Student in 1990. Following the completion of his course, he worked at the Hospital for one year before travelling to the UK to undertake a first Degree in Nursing at Greenwich University. Ahmad very nearly missed out on this key opportunity since, due to the travel restrictions imposed on all Palestinians at the time, he was unable to attend the initial interview at Greenwich.

Diabetes in the OPT
A brief word from Mr John Talbot

Diabetes and the need to expand our Retinal Unit.
Refurbishment and enlargement of the Medical Retinal Unit at our Jerusalem Hospital is the focus for this year’s fund raising at the Hospital Group. Medical retinal diseases – disorders of the retina that do not require surgery – are some of the most common conditions that afflict our patients in the Holy Land. The retina is the light-sensitive structure at the back of the eye that receives light and converts it into nerve impulses. Although very delicate, it is extremely complex and is prone to a number of diseases that can permanently affect vision.

50 Years in East Jerusalem
Our Greatest Hits

Since its move to East Jerusalem 50 years ago, The St John Ophthalmic Hospital has evolved into a series of centres of ophthalmic excellence right across the occupied Palestinian territory. Though a mere fifty years is nothing when compared to the 128 years that the Hospital has been in the Holy Land – and pales into insignificance alongside the original Order of St John Hospital, established in Jerusalem in 1099 – the last half a century has seen some momentous changes in the nature of what has become the modern Hospital Group. Here we take a look back at some of the greatest achievements accomplished during these 50 years, which serve to highlight just how much of an impact our charity continues to make in a very troubled region of the world.

Funding Today
The St. John Family

A colossal thank you goes out to all those of the St John Family who raised funds for us during 2009. The final league table of supporters is now in and an impressive one it is too! In 2009, the Priory of England donated £400,106, the Priory of the United States gave us £343,560 and the Priory of Scotland, £113,982. The Priories of New Zealand, Canada, Australia and New South Wales and Wales donated, £61,680, £49,157, £27,102 and £25,000 respectively. The total money brought in through the Priories for 2009 is a whopping £1,020,588!

Jerusalem
The final quarter of the outgoing year was another successful one in terms of Fundraising for Jerusalem. Our target for 2009 was exceeded and approximately £840,000 was raised, with nine major new donors cultivated. Currently, the most important element in the Jerusalem fundraising strategy is Corporate Funding. This concept is only now being developed as part of the social responsibility programmes of many Palestinian Corporations. The St. John Eye Hospital Group, being the leading eye care provider in the OPT, was in a very good position to partner with many important Corporations in 2009: the Palestinian Telecommunication Group, the Arab Bank, the Holy Land Insurance Agency and the Nobel Company to name but a few.

London
In London, too, our fundraisers exceeded their targets for the year bringing in a wonderful £1,506,390 in total. Thank you to all of the Trusts, Foundations, individuals and institutions who contributed so generously. Our London office – which houses the London Executive and the Fundraising and Marketing Department – also moved to its new premises in Charterhouse Mews (please see contact details on page 8 for our new address.) However, the last quarter of 2009 was marred by the news of the death of one of the Hospital Group’s staunchest UK backers, Mr Robin Cadbury. The Cadbury family had long been enormous supporters of our work, both through their charitable foundations and Mrs Jayne Cadbury's association with the Ladies Guild as both member and Chairman.

Interfaith Project 2010
Celebrating our work within the context of peace and religious diversity

In our Winter 09 edition, Head of Fundraising and Marketing, Ms Nicky Wynne, wrote a brief article touching upon a new fund- and awareness raising initiative, the Interfaith Project. This is currently being developed into an ongoing programme of discourse, which we hope to formally launch later this year. So far, the project has generated three sessions of theological debate, with another scheduled for late January. At the previous meeting in November 2009, representatives of the world's three primary monotheistic faiths – Islam, Judaism and Christianity – agreed upon a joint statement that they believed would do well to be endorsed by religious leaders around the world.

Eye Hospital Represented at London Marathon
Lisa Smith takes on the challenge!

In London, it’s that time of year again and our Charterhouse Mews office Administration Executive, Ms. Lisa Smith, has bravely agreed to run the London Marathon, on 25 April, on behalf of our Charity. Here, Lisa explains why… “For the last twenty years I have been surrounded by running events – short distance, half marathons and London Marathons – turning up to each in support of my father who runs for Charity every year. There is no better atmosphere than that of the London Marathon and apparently no better feeling than finishing the gruelling 26.2 miles! It has always been an ambition of mine to be part of that and complete it.

Eye to Eye Fundraising DVD
The Guild follow up last year’s Cadogan Hall Gala

Following the success of their wonderful Concert at Cadogan Hall on September 16th 2009, the Guild – with the financial assistance of an anonymous benefactor – have produced a commemorative DVD of the event to support the valuable fundraising work of the Hospital Group. The original Gala Concert presented the world premiere of Eye to Eye, a special commission for the Hospital Group by celebrated composer Patrick Hawes and performed by the English Chamber Orchestra. The event also featured a roster of British and Palestinian artists.
