SJEHG Represented at World Ophthalmology Congress

Dr Okasha and Victoria Sheffield with Dr Ouertani and Dr Abu Ramadan
Wednesday, 29 February 2012

St John Eye Hospital Group Board Member, Victoria Sheffield, and Gaza Clinic Director, Dr Kamal Okasha, finally met – entirely by chance – at the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC 2012) in Abu Dhabi recently.

Ms Sheffield, who is President and CEO of the International Eye Foundation in the USA, was introduced to Dr Okasha, while speaking with friends, Dr. Amel Ouertani from Tunisia and Dr. Maged Abu Ramadan from the oPt.

Although the two knew of each other, they had never actually met and both were thrilled to have the opportunity at the Congress.

Hosted this year by The Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) from 16 to 20 February, the WOC is the longest continuous international medical meeting, offering delegates a unique opportunity to meet and network with an international audience and to gain insight into the latest innovations in ophthalmology.

The first time a large international ophthalmology meeting has been hosted in the Middle East and Africa Region, WOC 2012 welcomed ophthalmologists from around the world to Abu Dhabi.

1000 internationally recognized speakers took part in over 230 invited scientific sessions covering all subspecialties in ophthalmology. The Programme included symposia, case studies, debates, panel discussions, video sessions and interactive lectures.

Ms Sheffield has been a SJEHG Trustee since June 2009 and Dr Okasha, who was appointed Director of the Gaza Clinic in January 2011, was awarded the Magaurin Cup for his outstanding work there in September last year.

Also in attendance at the Congress from SJEHG were:

Dr Ghassan Madieh (Medical Retina specialist - Jerusalem)
Dr Majdy Samaha (Cornea specialist - Jerusalem)
Dr Amer Muhsen (Glaucoma specialist - Jerusalem)
Dr Iyad Habil  (Jerusalem – just completed the Israeli Boards)
Dr Ala’a AlTalbishi (Jerusalem, doing his residency at Hadassah)
Saleh Al Qadi (Optometrist – Jerusalem)

It is exciting to note that the St John Eye Hospital Group would have been so effectively represented at this event, spreading news of our work amongst the international ophthalmic community.
